The Nature of Science

Grade 7 students applied what they learned in second term on the topic “The Nature of Science” by conducting a Performance Task that required them to investigate the effectiveness of commercial products versus their organic (eco-friendly) counterparts. The students experimented on detergent soap, dishwashing liquid, shampoo, lotion, toothpaste, facial wash, glue, make-up remover, diaper, and hair spray.

The results of their experiment showed that most of the organic (eco-friendly) products worked better than the commercial ones. However, these organic (eco-friendly) products are not popular among consumers, probably due to lack of awareness.

The students exhibited the results of their performance task in a Science Fair at the Promenade last December with the Grade 6 students as their target audience. The Science teachers, together with some select Grade 8 students, served as judges. They were rated based on the visual presentation of their experiment, how well they were able to control the variables to maintain the validity of their results, and how well they were able to answer the questions related to their experiment.
