“If we teach our children how to behave properly in society and to follow rules, then we should also guide them on how to behave ethically and responsibly in the online world.”
Monette C. David, Educational Technologist
Mrs. Monette C. David, Educational Technologist at PAREF Woodrose School, produced a research paper entitled “The Effectiveness of the Digital Citizenship Program of PAREF Woodrose in Improving the Digital Ethical Skills of Students.”
Recently, Mrs. David was invited to the International Conference on Educational Research in Labuan, Malaysia where she presented her research alongside professors, doctors and deans from Malaysia, Thailand, South Korea, Vietnam, and Brunei Darussalam.
Apart from receiving recognition for her research, Mrs. David also received positive attention for the unique features of Woodrose. In particular, the audience expressed interest in knowing more about Home-School Collaboration and Personal Formation.
PAREF Woodrose congratulates Mrs. Monette C. David for her significant contribution in uplifting the level of excellence of education!
We share below Mrs. David’s personal narration of her participation at the Labuan International Conference on Educational Research (LICER) held on September 28-30, 2017 at Dorsett Grand Hotel.
The travel from Manila to Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia took about 1 hour and 45 minutes. After which, we rode a ferry boat going to the Federal Territory of Labuan, Malaysia which was about another 3 ½ hours away.My husband and I were welcomed by the logistics officer of the government of Labuan with a big smile while holding a poster with my name on it. I learned that she is also the English teacher in a public. She brought me and my husband to our hotel and informed us that we will join the dinner prepared for the speakers of the International Conference on Educational Research. It was a formal gathering of educational leaders around Asia, one representative each from South Korea, Vietnam, Thailand, and the Philippines. I was seated among the key note speakers who were very kind and accommodating. Their researches were all based on pedagogy. And I realized that they value the optimization and maximization of the 21st Century skills in classroom teaching, thus using technology as a tool in learning.
The next day, I shared the research results of the Digital Citizenship program that was initially implemented in the Grade School Department among the Grade 6 students in SY2016-17. I began my presentation by describing our students, their age group, class size, etc. I also talked about the 3 core values of Woodrose – Respect, Responsibility, and Love for God and others; as well as the 3 pillars that make up our school – parents, teachers, and students.
After my presentation, several faculty members from Malaysia went up to me and commended me because they also realized how value formation in the digital world is really very important for our digital native students and expressed their interest to collaborate with us. They were amazed also on how we involve parents through home-school collaboration activities.
This experience was eye opening for me because I was able to see how different cultures strive to improve their level in education. Now, I fully understand our Executive Director, Dr. Villegas, who would always tell us to have a culture of excellence by making worthwhile researches and sharing it with our fellow educators. I am more inspired to do further research related to technology as we continue to strive for excellence for our beloved Woodrose.
