Last month, the Save Our Surroundings Organization (SOS) participated in the 39th International Coastal Cleanup hosted by the Department of Public Services Manila. Members and teacher volunteers collected various types of waste scattered throughout the sands of Baseco Beach, Manila. Filled sacks of trash were then segregated, counted, and recorded. In total, 698 pieces of waste were amassed, including grocery bags, food wrappers, plastic straws and stirrers, and bottle caps. Additionally, the members gathered 5 kilograms of microplastics. This event highlighted the Philippines’ overreliance on single-use items and inspired environmental collaboration between SOS and fellow volunteer organizations, proving to be a fruitful and impactful experience.
