“Let’s all take care of each other, making sure everyone feels at home and that no one feels left out.” This was the opening statement of our Executive Director, Dr. Gina Rama, as she welcomed the Woodrose community at the first assembly for SY 2018-19.
Then, after presenting an AVP of alumnae who recently graduated with flying colors from universities here and abroad, she went on to say: “I am sure you are all inspired by their achievements and awards. You might ask, ‘What was their secret? Was it magic, sheer coincidence, all by chance or luck? Was it the course or professor they had that was not demanding?’ No, it wasn’t magic, definitely not pure coincidence, for sure not by chance. After talking to some of them, I realized they had something in common: they had a goal and they worked hard to reach that goal. They sacrificed, they avoided distractions or anything that would keep them far from that goal, they were determined, focused, and they persevered up to the end. They also had their own set of issues, just like everyone else…I don’t feel like going to school…It’s so hard to wake up in the morning…The subjects are too difficult…I feel harassed, I need a break…I do not understand the relevance of this subject…and many more. But these awardees somehow managed not to be tricked by the easy way out or by all the difficulties they encountered along the way. They were not disciplined by their teachers nor by the school rules. They were disciplined by their own goals, their own dreams, steadily creating a solid and beautiful future for themselves.
So, today, as we start the new school year, I invite you to create your future by studying hard and persevering up to the end. Lead by example, serve with kindness, and help others reach their goals too.”
