The celebration of the “Linggo ng Wika at Kasaysayan” is one of the grand traditions in Woodrose. It marks the opening of the school year with the aim of promoting love and appreciation for the Filipino language and culture.
Despite the bad weather, the Grade School Level opened the week-long event on August 14, 2018 with a Parade of Heroines. The week was packed with performances and competitions that provided fun-filled and significant learning experiences: SAYAWIT (Sayaw at Awit), BIGSAYWIT (Bigkas, Sayaw, at Awit), Filipino essay-writing based on the theme Pilipino: Wika ng Saliksik, Filipino Story-Telling, and Kuwentong Adarna. The students also showed their skills and talents in the various contests such as Isahang Pagbigkas ng Tula of Grade 2; Teatrong Pagbasa of Grade 3; Malikhaing Pagkukuwento of Grade 4; Sabayang Pagbigkas of Grade 5; and Dagliang Talumpati of Grade 6. Interesting talks about family, politics, community, heroism, and nation-building were also carried out throughout the week.
In the morning of the last day, a field demonstration was held wherein each grade level presented a Philippine folkdance that they learned from their respective P.E. classes. A special dance number by moms and the performance of teachers were most applauded! The program ended with a heartwarming community singing of Ako ay Pilipino. In the afternoon, the JSMS – Philippine Women’s University Rondalla, led by their conductor, Mr. Noli Rodriguez rendered a lecture-concert for Grades 4-6 students. Finally, the traditional Salu-salo, a gastronomic, merry-making, and thanksgiving practice of the Filipinos solidified the cultural experience of the entire school community.
